In this article series we will profile the ball carriers that will be changing uniforms in 2013 as well as a few potential impact rookies that could make a splash in their first season in the big leagues.

In Detroit, the Lions backfield has floundered amid multiple injuries as Javhid Best is unlikely to play again thanks to multiple concussions and Mikel Leshoure has a hamstring injury and averaged just 3.7 YPC last season. In steps former Kardashian arm candy Reggie Bush who by all accounts could be just what the doctor ordered in the pass happy Lion offense. Green Bay’s musical chairs at running back will get a shot in the arm from two rookies as Bama’s Eddie Lacy and UCLA’s John Franklin figure to form a Thunder & Lightning duo that could keep Aaron Rodgers off his backside (51 sacks in 2012).

Atlanta will look to get past the NFC Title game and will turn to a familiar weapon as Steven Jackson of the division rival Rams will replace cement footed Michael Turner. It’s hard to believe that Rashard Mendenhall is just 25 years old. He’ll unite with former Steeler OC Bruce Arians in Arizona and is penciled in as the starter ahead of Ryan Williams. Mendy will need to prove that the ACL tear suffered at the end of 2011 is a thing of the past in order to regain fantasy relevance as his performance in 2012 left a lot to be desired (averaged just 3.6 YPC over six games).

VIEWS:

DynastyLeagueFootball.com are predicting that Mendy tops 1,200 yards despite playing in a dvision with multiple stout run defenses (SF, SEA, STL).

FFToday.com sees RB1 potential in Steven Jackson despite the fact that he’ll be 30 years in 2013 as he’ll be part of high flying Atlanta offense that averaged 26 PPG last season.

ProFootballTalk reports that the Lions plan to mirror Bush’s usage in New Orleans (averaged 59 catches his five years in New Orleans despite missing 20 games).

FootballPerspective concludes that both Packer rookies will be hard pressed to produce much better than RB3 numbers as they’ll likely be mired in a RBBC on a pass happy offense.

FANTASY FOOTBALL SPIN:

Steven Jackson signed a three-year, $12 million contract with Atlanta but the deal contains no guaranteed money behind the first season. He should see a major boost in red zone chances vaults him into the RB1 discussion (Turner had 51 red-zone opportunities in 2012 compared to just 27 for S-Jax). Based on his current ADP of #30 overall we feel he’s being slightly overlooked and makes for a solid target in round 2 especially in PPR leagues (averaged 49 receptions over past 8 seasons).

Rashard Mendenhall will play 2013 on a one-year, $2.5 million deal. He will turn 26 in June and will be a full season removed from his ACL tear when 2013 kicks off. First year head coach Bruce Arians is a proponent of feature RBs as evidence by his usage of Mendy in Pittsburgh and Vick Ballard last season in Indy so this is a camp battle to monitor closely. Ryan Williams (38th overall pick in the 2011 draft) played in just 5 games last season (shoulder indjury) after missing his entire rookie year (knee injury). Williams struggled last season averaging just 2.8 yards per carry (58 carries) but is still viewed as a true 3-down option. Mendenhall looks to be solid value right now as he has RB2 potential and can be had in rounds 9/10 based on ADP data (RB32). Ryan Williams is going slighlty lower as his ADP has him coming off the board in rounds 13/14 (RB47).

Reggie Bush signed a four-year, $16 million contract to be the feature RB in Detroit.

He averaged 4.67 YPC in Miami over the last two seasons despite a very limited passing game. He’ll now be part of the most pass happy offense in the NFL and is a favorite to lead all RBs in receptions giving him solid RB2 potential in standard leagues and possible RB1 status in PPR formats. Bush was the Dolphins every-down back the past two seasons and posted 443 carries for 2,072 yards (4.68 YPC) and 12 touchdowns. Mikel Leshoure could vulture red zone touches (had 9 TDs last season) which leads us to target Bush as an RB2 for 2013. His current ADP has him coming off the boards in the early part of round 3 (RB18) which is a bit high for us based on his prior injury history (but the PPR upside is off the charts).

Green Bay’s lack of balance on offense has led to Aaron Rodgers get his bell rung early and often (51 sacks last season).

The Packers ground game ranked 20th last season and they decided to address the backfield early and often via April’s draft selecting Alabama’s Eddie Lacy in round 2 and UCLA’s Johnathan Franklin in round 4. Both players went later than draft experts expected. Lacy is a bruising back that is the early favorite to start week 1 but Franklin will be close on his heels. The Packers backfield is crowded with DuJuan Harris and Alex Green also in the mix so we are not sold any Packer RB will be a consistent option in 2013. Franklin is better value currently (RB41 – ADP in rounds 11/12) to target as his 4.49 speed and a legit three-down skill set are intriguing especially if Lacy’s (RB 26, ADP in round 6) toe injury lingers this offseason.

On Thursday night at 8pm in Radio City Music Hall, the next crop of top tier NFL Freshman will await their fate as Mel Kiper and the rest of the so called experts debate whether NFL GMs have selected wisely or positioned themselves closer to the unemployment.

For our money, Mike Mayock of the NFL Network is a much more astute evaluator of talent than ESPN’s Eddie Munster body double (aka Mel Kiper) – pretty sure former Colt’s GM Bill Tobin would agree with our assessment of Kiper’s NFL chops.

We took a look at the Top prospect lists from some of the more reliable NFL Draft resources available (we even included ESPN) and today present the consensus on how the first 3-4 rounds could shake out.

Here’s the POSITION breakdown among the top 120 for the fantasy relevant positions: QBs (8), RBs (9), WRs (15), and TEs (6). There are 10 WRs among the top 75.

The top Prospect Rankings listed below are from the following experts/websites: Mike Mayock (NFL Network), DRAFTTek.com, FFToolbox.com, NEPatriotsDraft.com, WalterFootball.com, and ESPN.com

Despite the hype surrounding teams trading back into Round 1 to secure a QB and rumors that Ryan Nassib and Matt Barkley are being considered among the top 10 picks, we don’t see another QB hearing his name called until round 2 (once Geno Smith is selected). We have just one more QB (EJ Manuel) being selected before round 2 as he makes for an ideal fit for first year head coach Chip Kelly’s up tempo offense.

Many teams that are searching for help under center have signed / traded for stop gap options (KC- Alex Smith, Arizona – Carson Palmer, Oakland – Matt Flynn) which could lead them to fill other weaknesses during the first two rounds. Mike Glennon (NC State) has arguably the biggest arm in the draft but mobility concerns and questions about his leadership could drop him out of the first two rounds (could be an option for Bruce Arians vertical passing game in Arizona).

The RB class is equally mediocre in 2013 with Eddie Lacy likely to be the first RB off the board. We have him sliding to Day 2 but teams like Denver and Green Bay that pick late in round 1 could have an eye on the Alabama alum. Rumors have been circulated that UCLA’s Jonathan Franklin is in the consideration to be the first RB off the board based on his pass receiving skills and solid inside burst giving him a potential advantage over Lacy. We have Montee Ball going to Denver at pick #58 but Franklin will also be an option if he’s still on the board.

The true value among the skill position players will be at WR as many potential starters are likely to be available on Day 2 of the draft.

We see 4 wide receivers going in round 2 (Justin Hunter from Tennessee and DeAndre Hopkins from Clemson could crack round 1) but could see another two or three come off the board in rounds 2 as this has become a pass heavy league. Markus Wheaton (Oregon State) and Stedman Bailey (West Virginia) are two receivers that didn’t make our 2nd round cut. Draft experts have varying opinions on both players but each should be gone by the end of Round 3 at the latest.

It’s worth noting 88 receivers have been taken in the 2nd round since 1991. Only 10 of those receivers (11%) caught at least 50 passes as rookies and 21 more (24%) caught at least 32. Over half of the WRs receivers selected in the first two rounds of the past 22 drafts (92 of 171, 54%) finished with 31 catches or less in their rookie season. The following WRs came off the board in the first two rounds but had less than impressive rookie campaigns (failed to top 50 catches): Demaryius Thomas (22 in 2010), Dez Bryant (45 in 2010), Michael Crabtree (48 in 2009), Hakeem Nicks (47 in 2009), Jordy Nelson (33 in 2008), Calvin Johnson (48 catches in 2007), Sidney Rice (31 in 2007), Roddy White (29 in 2005), Chad Johnson (28 in 2001), and Reggie Wayne (27 in 2001). Despite the upside potential of some WRs in the 2013 draft class , their chance of gaining fantasy relevance in their first season in the NFL remains low (for the most part you are better off going with more established WRs unless playing in a dynasty league) – as we don’t see any AJ Green / Julio Jones type rookie seasons in this crop (those two combined for 119 catches, 2,016 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2011).

As a senior, he was hurt in a freak hit during practice and tore a large vein, the inferior vena cava, which carries blood from the lower half of the body back up to the heart. Before the injury, the senior played in nine games, and recorded eight pass breakups, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and four interceptions (two returned for touchdowns). Mike Mayock recently moved Hayden to his #1 CB - a true sign that his stock is on the rise after he was medically cleared.

Unlike last season, the 2013 draft lacks the bevy of fantasy difference makers as this class is a far cry from the 2012 draft which saw Andrew Luck and RG3 produce borderline QB1 numbers in their rookie seasons.

West Virginia’s Geno Smith is the consensus #1 signal caller but he operated in a mostly spread offense in college and regressed as the 2012 season wore on. Some question is ability to operate under pressure and rumors are circulating that Syracuse’ Ryan Nassib (former head coach Doug Marrone is now with the Bills and owns the #8 pick) and USC’s Matt Barkley could unseat him as the first QB off the board (although neither are first round talents in our book). Regardless, the QBs in this class will likely go undrafted in most re-draft fantasy leagues as they lack the pedigree of the 2012 class and will likely face a ton of growing pains in their first season.

The RB class this season also pales in comparison as there are no prospects on the same level as Trent Richardson or Doug Martin who each ended their rookie campaigns in the RB1 discussion.

Alabama’s Eddie Lacy is expected to be the most back off the board but could slip to round 2 amid conditioning concerns after an unimpressive Pro Day. St Louis , Cincinnati, and Green Bay could each use a feature back. Other RBs expected to go in the early rounds include Montee Ball (Wisconsin) who lacks breakaway speed and Giovani Bernard (North Carolina) labeled a solid receiver but lacking size to carry full workload. Andre Ellington (Clemson), Jonathan Franklin (UCLA) and Le’Veon Bell (Michigan State) could also hear their names called in the first three rounds.

When it comes to the WR class – depth is the strong suit of this class as we could see as many as 10 WRs come off the boards during the first two days of the draft.

WVU’s Tavon Austin is labeled as the most pro ready prospect and his return skills and solid hands should make him a top 20 (possibly 10) selection.

Cordarelle Patterson likely has the highest upside in this class but played just one year in D-1 (Tennessee). Patterson’s elusiveness and size/speed combo have some experts comparing him to Randy Moss. Keenan Allen (Cal) is battling back from a knee injury that has his draft stock in limbo (could become a solid gamble worth taking late in round 1 for a team like Houston). Deandre Hopkins (Clemson) apparently trashed a hotel room recently leaving serious character question marks but he has been rumored to be an option for the Rams with one of the two first round picks.

At the TE position, Notre Dame’s Tyler Eifert is expected to be a mid-first round selection as some think he’ll exceed the production of fellow Golden Domer Kyle Rudolph (Vikings) as Eifert has better open field speed.

Stanford’s Zack Ertz and San Diego State’s Gavin Escober are intriguing prospect likely to go on Day 2. San Fran head coach Jim Harbaugh is familiar with Ertz and could select him to pair with Vernon Davis as the 49ers receiving corps could use another playmaker. Escobar is a physical freak (6-foot-6, 254 pounds) but a less than impressive 4.84 40-yard dash at the Combine likely drops into round 2/3 despite the comparisons to Rob Gronkowski and Tony Gonzalez. Miami, the NY Jets, Tennessee, Green Bay and Atlanta are just a few teams that will consider TE upgrades early in the 2013 draft.

After spending countless hours hunkered down in our make shift war room, pouring over hours and hours of Path to the Draft and various other draft shows, we’ve formulated our best guess as to where the top prospects will come off the board when Roger Goodell takes to the podium on Thursday night at Radio City Music Hall. With the Revis trade now finalized, its unlikely that the order will change much more before Thursday. St Louis (#16 and #22) and Minnesota (#23 and #25) each have two first round picks and each could use an upgrade at WR so their GMs could be blazing the phone lines in a quest for Tavon Austin or Cordarrelle Patterson.

Without further adieu we unveil our First Round Forecast for the 2013 NFL Draft:

Offense / Defense ranks refer to where a team finished in 2012 (#1 being the best in the NFL).

The former are gone and the latter have been signed to fill the void - and they can't come close. THe 6'3', 325 lb Lotulelei can go a long way to filling that void - literally and figuratively. The medical condition that stopped him from participating in the NFL combine has been revealed to be an anomoly and he has full clearance, meaning he can resume the upward tragectory that he was on before being derailed at the combine. Vick is a band aid, who will need more than a few band aids to stay on the field again this year, and it's hard to picture second year QB Nick Foles fitting Kelly's scheme...but not impossible. The Eagles may address QB in RD 2, or even later in RD 1 if they get antsy. Thankfully Andy Reid is gone but the importance of a strong offensive line is not and the Eagles get a future franchise LT who will start at RT.

In this article we assume that you are starting your WR1s regardless of the matchup.

Each week we will analyze the defenses and provide our take on which Quarterbacks you should start and which should be benched based on matchups with stout run defenses, stubbed toes, potential weather problems, conduct code violations etc.

Follow the live interactive injury report that Rob Warner maintains up to game time to get the latest injury news with fantasy advice. The most important QB situation to watch is in Washington where it looks like RGIII is going get to beat up on sad Eagles secondary that should pay money back to the team and apologize to the fan base…seriously.

Quarterback Upgrades

Sam Bradford (vs. Buccaneers): Look, it’s championship week and hopefully you don’t need to start Sam Bradford but if the ‘you know what’ has hit the fan than the Rams up and down signal caller might help you out this week. Bradford has the amazing luck of facing the Bucs, a pleasure that a good high school QB could exploit. The Bucs are officially the most pitiful pass defense in the league and aside from the staggering amount of yards and a lack of effort matched only by the Eagles secondary they have allowed 27 passing TDs this year.

Tony Romo (vs. Giants) – Romo may seem like a no-brainer if you haven’t been paying attention but as Romo owners can attest, he’s been disappointing for much of the year. Of late, however, he has actually not crapped the bed even the most critical, clutch moments. Little baby all grows up! Maybe. Our friends over at ProFootballFocus fantasy, the most accurate rankers in the fantasy football world this year, have Romo all the way up at #4 this week. That’s because he’s posting good numbers and faces a Giants defense that has been gashed for big fantasy points this year regularly. Last week they got slaughtered by Drew Brees and the problems don’t seem to be easy fixes. He’s a great play this week.

Quarterback Downgrades

Josh Freeman (vs. Rams) – Freeman is used to having time. The Bucs have protected the passer as well as nearly anyone surrendering just 21 sacks but this week they face a tough pass that has 41 sacks. Freeman was replaced last week toward the end of an extremely embarrassing loss and the Bucs have clearly quit on both sides of the ball. The Rams revamped secondary is playing well. Over the past 5 weeks the Rams have given up the 3rd fewest fantasy points to QBs (15.3) in the league and on the season they’ve only allowed 14 passing touchdowns. Not what you want to hear of you have to start Freeman this week. He had a good run of high quality fantasy starts but it’s over.

Matthew Stafford (vs. Falcons) – Stafford came into the season with huge fantasy expectations. He was poised to enter the elite with Brady and Brees and that hasn’t really happened. He’s performed well enough to a weekly must-start but certainly not top 3 or 4 as expected. Stafford not a guy that can or should bench this week, unless you are loaded at QB, but we do think you should temper your enthusiasm. The Falcons are coming into this week’s contest on a high after destroying Eli Manning and the Giants. They’ve been stingy when it comes to giving up points through the air with just 13 passing TDs allowed but they will give up yards. The question for Stafford is can he add TDs to the yards with his banged up WR corp. Over the last 7 games Stafford has just two performances with over 20 fantasy points and three with less than 13 fantasy points.

Quarterback Sleepers

Nick Foles (vs. Redskins): Foles is getting some weapons back this week. He’ll have Brent Celek and Lesean McCoy to help keep the Redskins defense honest and provide reliable targets. The fact that one of the best rushers in the NFL is returning to the field all but assures that Andy Reid will ignore the run – hence the reason Philly justifiably fans can’t wait for the door to hit him in his giant ass. The Redskins have been playing much better on both sides of the ball of late but they are still the 30th ranked D in net yards allowed passing and have surrendered 28 passing TDs. If the Eagles have any effort left in them (and that’s questionable) Foles can have a very good week.

Chad Henne (vs. Patriots)– This isn’t going to come as a shocker but the Patriots have trouble stopping the pass, maybe even when it’s the Jaguars passing against them. On the season only three teams are giving more passing yards and their 27 passing TDs allowed is nearly as bad. Henne has had great success against the Patriots in the recent past. In 3 of his last 4 matches against them he has thrown for over 300 yards. The last time he faced them (2011) he threw for 416 yards and added 2 TDs. The Jaguars will surely be playing from behind and airing it out as all 18 of their fans pull for them to make a game of it against the machine that is Tom Brady.

Our friends at NFLWeather.com have provided us the latest on the weather for the big NFC West battle this week between the Niners and the upstart Seahawks. Weather is going to be critical to your decisions if you have players in playoff leagues and beyond. As the elements get harsher decisions become tougher and that’s why we are big fans of NFLWeather.com and recommend that you consult them every week before settling on your start/sit decisions. With that, here is what Chris Lovi, columnist, NFLWeather.com has to say about the game and the challenges the weather will present…

No, you did not predict this in week 1. Facing off in a highly anticipated NFC West rivalry game, both the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks have a lot on the line Sunday night. A win for the 49ers and they will go on to clinch their second consecutive division title. A win for the Seahawks clinches their spot in the playoff and also leaves the NFC West title up for grabs. With both teams had impressive wins the week before, this game will arguably be the most intriguing matchup on the Week 16 schedule. That also makes it a craps-shoot for those still in their fantasy football league playoffs.

NFLWeather.com forecasts a chance of showers come game time with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 35. Any moisture in the air brings added pressure to both offenses and their ability to score. Even though both teams have shown they have the ability to put up a large amount of points, more than a 100 points in two weeks for the Seahawks, both defenses are going to be putting pressure on their respective young quarterbacks.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has been playing out of his mind these past two weeks. He has gained more confidence every week, which is exactly what you want to see heading into a matchup against the 49ers. What Wilson needs to do Sunday Night is spread the ball around, which could be difficult in rainy weather. We saw those tactics last week when the 49ers defense faced their biggest challenge as Tom Brady was consistently mixing in different patterns. Now Russell Wilson isn’t Tom Brady……yet, but Wilson has the benefit of the Bay Area’s own Marshawn Lynch in the backfield and Lynch always seems to have a good game against San Francisco.

alt="" width="275" height="183" data-height="183" data-width="275" />On the other side of the ball, the 49ers have a tough task ahead of them, playing in front of one of the loudest home crowds on national television against a division rival. If rain doesn’t upset Colin Kaepernick’s ability to make plays, the crowd noise in what has become known as “The 12th Man” will. Knowing this heading into Seattle, Jim Harbaugh will most likely rely on Frank Gore to control the ball on offense. Despite having a reputation of a solid rushing defense, Seattle has had a tough time stopping number 21. Gore rushed for 137 yards in week 7 against the Seahawks when San Francisco squeaked out a win at home on a clear night, according to NFLWeather’s historical analytics.

This game is likely coming down to turnovers in the rain. The 49ers will have confidence. They proved last week that they could beat an elite team on the road, in bad weather, as they did to the Patriots. The Seahawks have the hottest offense in football. This game is the one to watch in week 16.

In this article we assume that you are starting your WR1s regardless of the matchup.

Each week we will analyze the defenses and provide our take on which WRs you should start and which should be benched based on matchups with stout run defenses, stubbed toes, potential weather problems, conduct code violations etc.

The following Defenses are allowing 16 or fewer fantasy points per game to opposing pass catchers (over the past 5 weeks): Miami, Cincinnati, Seattle, Arizona, Chicago and Pittsburgh. It’s worth noting that the stout secondaries in Seattle and Pittsburgh will both be missing key pieces in week 15. Steeler shutdown CB Ike Taylor will miss at least two games with a leg injury elevating Miles Austin to solid WR2 status. Brandon Browner dropped his appeal and will miss the final 4 games of the season after testing positive for PEDs (fellow CB Richard Sherman will play as he intends to appeal). An injured Stevie Johnson is just a desperation play as Seattle CB Richard Sherman has allowed just 1 TD on the season. Despite Patrick Peterson impressive season, he should not be left alone with Megatron. Chicago held A-Rod to just 219 yards and one TD in the week 2 meeting in Lambeau and the Pack will likely be without Jordy Nelson in the rematch with Greg Jennings expected to get the start in a very difficult matchup.

On the flip side, these defenses (Tampa, Houston, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Oakland, and Dallas) have been shredded by passing games and are allowing 27 or more fantasy points per game to opposing WRs (over the past 5 weeks). Marques Colston / Lance Moore should bounce back this week against a very generous Tampa secondary. Reggie Wayne, Donnie Avery and TY Hilton are all worth considering against a Houston secondary that is ranked worst in the NFL in fantasy PPG allowed to WRs over the past 5 games (Jonathan Joseph is far from 100%). Mike Wallace could build on his 2-TD performance last week against a Cowboy secondary that has regressed big time in the 2nd half of the season.

A few big name pass catchers will be dealing with bumps & bruises in week 15. The Packers Jordy Nelson will miss his 2nd straight game after reinjuring his hamstring in week 13. Greg Jennings and James Jones should see additional targets but the difficult matchup with Chicago limits both to just WR3 status. Dwayne Bowe’s anemic season could be in jeopardy as he’s been ruled out for week 15 with a rib injury. Jon Baldwin will assume the #1 WR role but is just a desperation play with Brady Quinn under center. Dez Bryant’s fractured finger had some suggesting his season was over earlier in the week but he has returned to practiced and seems likely to be in uniform against Pittsburgh. Cecil Shorts missed week 14 with a concussion but the 2nd year breakout star has been cleared and is likely to return for the matchup with a Miami defense that has been stingy to opposing WRs over the past month. Sidney Rice suffered a foot injury and was in a walking boot forcing him to miss Wednesday’s practice. Despite scoring 5 TDs over the past six weeks, fantasy owners should look elsewhere in week 15 as Rice will be hobbled and faces an emerging Buffalo pass defense.

Wide Receiver Upgrades

Steve Smith (@ San Diego): The 33-year-old WR from Utah has posted back to back 100 yard performance and could be primed to top the century mark again this week as the Panthers face a favorable matchup against a slow-footed and aging Charger secondary that ranks 22nd against the pass (243 YPG). Smith is averaging 77 YPG but has just 2 touchdowns on the season. Fantasy owners should ride the hot hand this week as the Chargers are allowing the 8th most fantasy PPG to WRs over the past 5 weeks.

Lance Moore (vs Tampa Bay): The 7th year wideout from Toledo layed an egg in week 14 against the G-men as he finished with just 1 catch for 26 yards. On the season, Moore is averaging 71 YPG with four touchdowns and had topped 50 yards in 5 straight before last week’s dud. This week the Saints will be fighting for their playoff lives in a matchup with Tampa’s league worst pass defense (312 YPG). Moore exploded for 9 catches and 121 yards in the October meeting with Tampa when they still had CB Eric Wright (now suspended) and Aquib Talib (traded to the Pats. The downfield threat should be positioned for a major bounce back performance in a dream matchup.

Josh Gordon (vs Washington): The rookie supplemental pick from Baylor is locked in as Brandon Weeden’s go-to WR as he leads the team with 33 targets since the week 10 BYE. Gordon has amassed 14 catches for 202 yards over the past two weeks and appears positioned to approach the 100 yard mark again this week against a Redskin secondary that is allowing the 3rd most fantasy PPG to opposing wideouts on the season. Washington’s 31st ranked pass defense is allowing 289 YPG and have yielded a league high 27 TDs through the air.

Fantasy owners of RG3 will likely have to wait until game time to plug in the #1 fantasy QB as he’s listed as a questionable / game time decision with an LCL Sprain. The rookie from Baylor has returned to practice and vows to suit up but his dual threat ability could be limited against an emerging Cleveland pass defense. Kirk Cousins would be a major downgrade for Pierre Garcon owners if Griffin is unable to go.

At running back, Ahmad Bradshaw is very questionable for the matchup with Atlanta which could open the door for rookie David Wilson to build on his 100 2-TD performance from week 14.

Carolina’s John Stewart (ankle) could miss his 3rd straight gave against San Diego but Deangelo Williams is just a flex play in this difficult matchup. Fred Jackson will miss the remainder of the season locking CJ Spiller into solid RB1 status for the final three weeks starting this week against a Seattle run defense that has showed leaks recently.

At the WR position, the Packers Jordy Nelson seems likely to miss his 2nd straight game after reinjuring his hamstring in week 13.

In this article we assume that you are starting your RB1s regardless of the matchup.

Each week we will analyze the defenses and provide our take on which RBs you should start and which should be benched based on matchups with stout run defenses, stubbed toes, potential weather problems, conduct code violations etc.

The following Defenses are allowing 14 or fewer fantasy points per game to opposing rushers (over the past 5 weeks): Denver , Indianapolis, Houston , Tampa, San Diego, and Buffalo. Those that own Vick Ballard (vs Houston), the Saints 4 Horseman (vs Tampa), and Deangelo Williams (@ San Diego) should consider your alternatives. Ray Rice (vs Denver) , Arian Foster (vs Indy) and Marshawn Lynch (@ Buffalo) remain must starts despite the somewhat difficult matchups.

On the flip side, these defenses (Arizona, Green Bay, Oakland, New England, Carolina and Atlanta) have been shredded by ground games and are allowing 21 or more fantasy points per game to opposing RBs (over the past 5 weeks). Mikel Leshoure (@Arizona), Jamaal Charles (@ Oakland), Matt Forte (vs Green Bay) and Ryan Mathews (vs Carolina) will be difficult to bench in week 15.

On the injury front, Ahmad Bradshaw is very questionable for the matchup with Atlanta which could open the door for rookie David Wilson to build on his 100 2-TD performance from week 14.

As always, injuries will surely play a role in your lineup decisions and our interactive INJURY CHART with fantasy advice . The Injury Report will be updated up until the 1pm Sunday kickoffs.

Running Back Upgrades:

Darren McFadden (vs. Kansas City): In his first game back since missing four weeks with an ankle injury, McFadden rushed 11 times for 52 yards against the Denver Broncos. Although not a stellar performance, McFadden did manage to catch a couple of passes including a 12-yard touchdown from Carson Palmer. In the nine games this year, McFadden has been targeted on average six times a game and has about four receptions per contest. This week McFadden faces the Kansas City Chiefs, who are ranked 27th against the run, allowing 131 yards a game to running backs (17 FPG). In the past two weeks, Kansas City has given up over 300 yards and two touchdowns to the Browns and Panthers. McFadden last faced the Chiefs in Week 8 rushing for 114 yards on 29 carries.

Jonathan Dwyer (@Dallas): Earlier in the week, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin indicated that he doesn’t plan to change his running back situation when Pittsburgh travels to Dallas to take on the Cowboys.

That makes Dwyer the clear starter for the rest of the season even after coming off an eight carry 32 yard performance against the Chargers last week. In Week 15, Dwyer will face Dallas’ 16th ranked run defense that has allowed 122 yards per game and four rushing touchdown in the last five weeks (19 FPG). In just the last two contests against the Bengals and the Eagles, Dallas has allowed over 300 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Dwyer could be the third back to rush for over 100 yards in just the last four weeks against the Cowboys.

Mikel Leshoure (@ Arizona): The Arizona Cardinals hope to erase last week’s defensive effort. The Cardinals allowed 284 yards on the ground to Seattle, including not one but two 100-yard rushers in Marshawn Lynch (128 yards), and rookie Robert Turbin (108 yards). Lynch also added three touchdowns in the Seahawks’ 58-0 beating of the Cardinals. Now the Arizona defense will take on the tandem of Lions running backs Mikal Leshoure and Joique Bell. Last week the pair split carries almost evenly and each rushed for 49 yards in Detroit’s loss to the Packers. Leshoure has also scored in three of his last four games, as he takes on a defense that has given up 634 yards on the ground in the last three games against the Seahawks, Jets and Rams.

Running Back Downgrades:

Vick Ballard (@ Houston): The Colts rookie had one of his best performances of the season last week, rushing 19 times for 94 yards. Ballard is now the starter for the rest of the season since teammates Donald Brown and Delone Carter are injured and will miss most if not the remainder of the year.

Unfortunately this is not the best week for Ballard to really establish himself. The rookie out of Mississippi State will face the leagues second best defense against the run. The Houston Texans have allowed just 91 yards a game and only three rushing touchdowns on the year (11 FPG). As a matter of fact, last week was the first time all season that the Texans have allowed over 100 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown in the same game. Ballard could have a tough going since Houston is coming off one of their worst games this season. Houston will play Indianapolis twice in the next three weeks, making this game crucial for both teams as they fight for playoff positions.

Deangelo Williams (@ San Diego): Jon Stewart will likely miss his 3rd straight game but Deangelo Williams remains a flex play at best this week in a difficult matchup with Cam Newton stealing a chunk of the red zone rushing attempts. In the week 14 upset with over Atlanta, Cam Newton ran nine times for 116 yards and a TD while DeAngelo Williams rushed 17 times for 56 yards (just 3.3 YPC) and added 2 catches for 56 yards. The Chargers defense is allowing 92 YPG on the ground (fourth in the NFL), with just five rushing TDs given up through 13 games.

Ray Rice (vs. Denver): I already know what you’re thinking, and I’m not saying to bench Ray Rice. But just hear me out, because this is more about Denver than it is about Rice. In the last five games, the Denver Broncos have played against Darren McFadden, Doug Martin, Jamal Charles, Ryan Mathews, and D’Angelo Williams (with a sprinking of Cam Newton). Against all of those running backs, and a running quarterback Denver has allowed a solid 69 yards per game and no rushing touchdowns. None. The last running back to score against this defensive unit was Cincinatti’s BenJarvus Green-Ellis back in Week 9. Denver is averaging just 13 FPG to running backs and is ranked 6th in rushing defense. Despite a 9-4 record, Baltimore fired offensive coordinator Cam Cameron earlier in the week. Former Colts head coach Jim Caldwell takes over, and it would seem Ray Rice is bound for a larger role than before. However this could be a tough week for the Rutgers alum.

Running Back Sleepers:

David Wilson (@ Atlanta): Amazing what can change in just a few months. To start the season, rookie running back David Wilson carried the ball two times and then fumbled.

He spent the next couple of months in the Tom Coughlin doghouse and only played on special teams and carried the occasional ball when Ahmad Bradshaw needed a drink of water. Fast forward to Week 13 against the Saints and Wilson finally arrived leaving that doghouse in the rearview. The rookie back out of Virginia Tech carried 13 times for 100 yards and scored twice, one of which was from 52 yards out. Oh yeah, he also added a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and was just named Special Teams Player of the Week. Wilson will take on the Falcons that have allowed 127 yards per game on the ground. Atlanta has given up 14 total rushing touchdowns on the season, including five in the past five weeks.

Ryan Matthews (vs. Carolina): Despite holding the Atlanta Falcons to just 35 yards rushing, Carolina has not solved their run stopping issues. Prior to the Falcons game, Carolina has been burned to the tune of 362 yards and three touchdowns in just two games against the Chiefs and the Eagles. Not to mention that in the last five games, Carolina has been the fifth worst team against the run allowing 117 yards per game and five touchdowns (21 FPG). Last week, Mathews carried the rock 25 times for 65 yards against the Steelers, which is the most carries he has had in a game all season. This could be a sign of things to come as he is set to carry the full workload in a game. The third-year pro is averaging about 60 yards per contest, and has only hit pay dirt once this season – not what owners were expected when they used a 2nd-3rd round pick. This weekend, Mathews could very well make owners forget about his disappointing season as he has a solid chance at producing RB2 numbers against a very generous Panthers defense that has surrendered 11 rushing touchdowns on the season.

Joique Bell (@ Arizona): We discussed above how Arizona has struggled to stop the run all season. Even though Mikel Leshoure is the feature back, Bell sees plenty of action. In week 14, Bell flexed his dual threat skills as he carried the ball 12 times for 49 yards and added five catches for 47 yards in the Sunday Night loss to Green Bay.
