The stop watches and weight rooms will be working over time in Indy this week as the combine gets into full swing. How fast a player times in shorts and how many bench presses are completed can go a long way in causing draft stocks to rise and plummet.
Today we present a First Round Mock Draft from RealSportsHype.com that has multiple early selections that I am on board with. Minnesota and St Louis will be fielding trade calls up until they are on the clock on April 26th but if they stay at #2 / #3 – addressing two of the weaker O-line’s in the league should take priority. Matt Kalil (USC) and Riley Reiff (Iowa) are both viewed as legit LT prospects at the next level and would be welcomed additions for QBs Sam Bradford and Christian Ponder.
It’s worth noting that this Mock has five WRs going in the first round (South Carolina’s Alshon Jeffery is not one of them).
Jacksonville’s 32nd ranked passing offense needs to add multiple play makers this offseason. If a less than impressive 40 time causes consensus #1 WR prospect Justin Blackmon to slide - the Jags will spring to the podium to make their selection. Mike Thomas and Cecil Shorts are complimentary WRs at best.
I am also in agreement that Washington will go with the best offensive difference maker on the board if they are unable to trade up for RG3. Despite the impressive season from rookie RB Roy Helu – Alabama’s Trent Richardson is an elite prospect that should not fall past the #6 pick.
Both Super Bowl combatants could go on the offensive in round 1 as New England needs to address a less than impressive WR corps and the G-men will be looking to add TE depth after their top 2 TEs suffered knee injuries that could keep them sidelined for the start of the 2012 season. LSU’s Rueben Randle is a big bodied WR that would be an ideal compliment to slot dynamo Wes Welker (free agent is expected back in Foxboro). Georgia TE Orson Charles is an athletic freak and would provide Eli with another aerial weapon to fill the void left by the expected exodus of Super Bowl hero Mario Manningham (free agent).
