Does Kevin Kolb have a Future as a Cardinal?

The Cardinals paid a king’s ransom to pry Kevin Kolb from the Eagles. They further invested in Kevin Kolb with a franchise QB style contract. The Cardinal’s clearly have some concerns now after Kolb didn’t exactly wow in an injury plagued debut season for the team. As a matter of fact, he was outperformed in many ways by backup QB John Skelton. Now rumors are swirling that the Cardinals, always looking for a way to sell tickets, may be among the teams that would take a run at a healthy Peyton Manning. ProFootballTalk.com posted a piece on the recent comments from Cardinals GM Rod Graves who while giving Kolb a luke warm vote of confidence left open the possibility that there could be real competition for the starting QB job.

According to Rotoworld, Graves is likely to pick up the $7 million roster bonus Kolb is due, but that shouldn’t preclude them from going after Manning. They point out that the cap hit for releasing Kolb would be $8.3 million.
Mike Sando of ESPN expects the Cardinals to go into the season with Kolb at the helm, but also refers to Graves comment that you can’t rule out a change at the position.
ProFootballFocus.com has Kolb ranked as the 28th best QB option heading into 2012.
FANTASY FOOTBALL SPIN
Am I nuts or does it feel like people are writing Kolb off a bit too soon? He wasn’t very impressive but he did have a higher QB rating Flacco, Palmer, and Dalton to name a few. Barring the acquisition of Peyton Manning, I think the Cardinals have to five Kolb another season to see what he can do. They have invested too much in him. As a student of economics I understand that you reach a point where you are making the error called ‘sunk money fallacy’ – simply put you are throwing good money after bad. At the risk of boring you and to delve deeper into economic theory the Cardinals also have to weigh opportunity cost. Are they passing up on their future franchise QB by sticking with Kolb? I don’t think so – unless there is a healthy Peyton Manning available and you believe that you can get 4 or 5 more good years out of him. Although, one could argue that if the Cards stay out of the Matt Flynn sweepstakes because they are giving Kolb another year they would be passing on an opportunity.
The bottom line, in my humble opinion, is that the Cardinals have little choice but to stick with Kolb for one more season to try and get out of him close to what they have invested in him.
